Causes of orthodontic problems

"Dr. Janssen, what causes orthodontic problems?"
Orthodontic problems result from inherited characteristics, such as tooth size and environmental issues, which may adversely affect jaw size and jaw position in relation to the skull.  Environmental factors include, but are not limited to:  A) airway obstruction from enlarged tonsils and adenoids, which results in mouth breathing.  Mouth breathing necessitates an altered tongue posture, causing a high roof of the mouth and a narrow arch form.  B) thumb sucking flares upper arch forward and lower arch backwards, resulting in a gap between the upper and lower teeth.  The result is frequently a tongue thrusting habit, which helps preserve the jaw discrepancy.  C) dental disease can result in the premature loss of baby teeth.  The loss causes teeth to shift into the space that the last baby tooth was preserving.  The result is the loss of arch length and increased potential for crowding.
"What habits contribute to "bad bites? "
A number of childhood habits can lead to orthodontic problems, such as thumb or finger sucking, sucking on a pacifier, sucking on a lip, mouth breathing (often caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids), fingernail biting, and "tongue thrust".
